Jamie Carragher has bitten back at accusations that Liverpool are ‘bottling it’ in the run-in to the season by comparing the Reds’ overall performance for the campaign to two clubs in particular.

It was just over a month ago that Jurgen Klopp’s side were still in contention for four trophies this term, but subsequent exits from the FA Cup and Europa League, in addition to slipping behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race, threaten to see the German’s reign peter out to an anti-climax.

However, in his latest column for The Telegraph, the 46-year-old insisted that his former club and Arsenal deserve praise for how they’ve competed with Pep Guardiola’s side, pointing to how that duo have performed in comparison to Manchester United and Chelsea, who sit seventh and ninth respectively.

Carragher wrote: “If Arsenal and Liverpool are ‘bottling it’ in April and May, what does that tell us about Manchester United and Chelsea for the rest of the season?

“They are clubs which have made so many poor decisions they are nowhere near the required level, albeit Pochettino is in the process of trying to fix previous mistakes.

“Arteta and Klopp are being judged to the ultimate standard in taking on Guardiola. City are so freakishly good with resources beyond Arsenal and Liverpool, the fairest reference point is with United and Chelsea, especially, who have spent mega millions for a watching brief in the race for the top four at this point in the season.”

Liverpool fans know better than anyone that there’s no shame in coming up narrowly second best to Man City when their financial resources are vastly superior (and when they can rack up 115 Financial Fair Play charges without a care in the world!).

Rival supporters will inevitably indulge in tribal nonsense on social media whereby they try to label the teams who fall slightly short of winning the Premier League as ‘bottlers’, when in the cases of United and Chelsea they may be best advised to get their own houses in order first.

It’s not wholly implausible that those two clubs could miss out on European football altogether for next season, even with the Red Devils accruing a net transfer spend of more than £1bn since 2014 but having not so much as a title challenge to show for it, and the Blues posting just over £650m for the same metric in two chaotic years of Todd Boehly’s ownership thus far.

Annoyingly, Liverpool won only one of their four league games against that pair this term despite being a far superior team, but even if we miss out on domestic glory again, at least we can be thankful that our club is much more competently run than the Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge basket cases of recent years.

Jamie Carragher analysed the ‘chaotic’ nature of Liverpool’s counterattacking play and how a lack of composure may cost them in the Premier League title race.

The Reds have been dismally wasteful in recent matches, dropping points against Manchester United and Crystal Palace despite creating a host of gilt-edged chances against both teams, and their six-game rolling average for shot conversion has plummeted since February.

Speaking on Sky SportsMonday Night Football, the ex-Anfield defender analysed a few passages of play from Jurgen Klopp’s side where they failed to make the most of opportunities they’d have been expected to score.

Carragher said: “Is there a theme of certain types of chances that, when you look at Manchester City, they’re a bit more controlled? Liverpool are a bit more chaotic. How often do they find themselves in these positions where someone is running through on goal and it’s so frantic – it’s never really controlled.”

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

He also pored through Curtis Jones’ glaring miss against Palace yesterday, stating: “If Kevin De Bruyne is in this situation, Bernardo Silva, they make the right pass. We run it on – [Cody] Gakpo, it’s a decent pass, but does Curtis Jones look fully comfortable? It’s a poor touch. The ball then bobbles up and he puts it wide.”

There are definitely a few examples of promising counterattacks from which Liverpool failed to score this season, from the one against the Eagles on Sunday to a five-on-two at Old Trafford last week and the breakaway which ended with Trent Alexander-Arnold hitting the crossbar against Arsenal at Anfield.

If the Reds get any such opportunities in their remaining six Premier League games, they simply can’t afford to waste them if they’re to displace Man City by 6pm on 19 May.

Even casual observers of recent Liverpool games could deduce that the Reds have been criminally wasteful of late, and the underlying numbers serve to highlight the alarming rate of decline in that regard.

On Sky SportsMonday Night Football, presenter David Jones brought up a graphic showing the six-game rolling average for shot conversion for Jurgen Klopp’s side, highlighting how it has ‘fallen off a cliff’ from 17% in February to 6% now.

In response to that seismic drop in the space of two months, Jamie Carragher said: “It has to change. I think Liverpool’s xG in this run is around nine and they’ve scored two during the run that they’re on, which is not great. For it to go like that, right now at the most pivotal of times, is a huge problem.

“There’s still time to fix that and get it back, but the nature of players is that it’ll always be a little bit like that because of the way they finish, the type of players that they are. That has to change very quickly if Liverpool are to go back into the title race.”

Liverpool scored 24 goals in their first seven Premier League games of the calendar year, hitting four past Newcastle, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Brentford and Luton in quick succession. They’ve netted just nine times in their subsequent six top-flight matches, with three of those coming against rock-bottom Sheffield United at Anfield.

They took 21 shots and had an xG of 2.81 against Crystal Palace on Sunday (Sofascore), but Dean Henderson still came away with a clean sheet and a victory for his team.

As Carragher said, the Reds need to rediscover their scoring boots pronto if they’re to remain in touch in the title race.

Jamie Carragher was left raging at one Liverpool player during the second half of their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace this afternoon.

The Reds were trailing 0-1 at half-time and spurned a good opportunity to equalise 10 minutes after the interval when Darwin Nunez’s close-range effort was hit straight at Eagles goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports in reaction to that missed chance, the ex-LFC defender rued (15:15): “Darwin Nunez has got to score. How often do we say that?”

Nunez will always be appreciated by Liverpool fans for his indefatigable attitude, even on days when things aren’t going his way.

However, while the £140,000-per-week striker might already have 18 goals this season, it’s inescapable that his tally should be higher when considering the chances that he passes up, and that effort in the 55th minute today is another example.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

The Uruguayan is capable of conjuring show-stopping moments of quality, such as his chipped finish against Brentford in February and his last-gasp winner at Nottingham Forest last month, but far too often he fails to capitalise on opportunities that he’d be expected to score.

If Nunez can add a truly cold-blooded edge to his finishing, he’d be a phenomenal player, but he simply must be more clinical – especially on days like this where Liverpool badly needed him to be at his sharpest.

Jamie Carragher was almost lost for words over the manner in which Liverpool fell behind to Crystal Palace at Anfield this afternoon.

Reds fans hoping for an emphatic response to the Atalanta thrashing on Thursday would’ve been left raging in the 14th minute when Eberechi Eze was left with all the time and space in the world to slot the ball past the returning Alisson Becker and put the visitors in front.

Speaking on commentary duty for Sky Sports (14:17), the ex-LFC defender was fuming over the amount of room which was afforded to the 25-year-old to score one of the easiest goals of his career.

Carragher said: “The space there, you cannot believe. Another shocking start by Liverpool.”

Liverpool needed a strong start to dispel the negativity which stemmed from Thursday night’s Europa League humiliation, but instead they made it far too easy for Palace to draw first blood at Anfield.

Quite how Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk left Eze in so much room to pick his spot to score will have left Reds fans and Jurgen Klopp almost speechless with horror.

It could’ve been even worse just a few minutes later when Jean-Philippe Mateta beat Alisson, only for Andy Robertson to rush back and make a heroic goalline clearance.

That’s now 21 matches out of 51 matches this season that Liverpool have conceded the first goal. They’ve only been beaten six times so far, but that statistic could well rise if they don’t kick their atrocious habit of limping out of the traps and letting the opposition hit the front.

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to tighten up defensively if they’re to end Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club as Premier League champions.

The Reds go into today’s clash against Crystal Palace having not kept a clean sheet in their last eight matches, with five goals conceded over the past week to Manchester United and Atalanta.

Speaking to Sky Sports at Anfield prior to this afternoon’s game, the ex-LFC defender said: “There is a feeling when you play Liverpool that you’ll get a chance, and it’s been there for most of the season.

“I think there’s 20 times this season where Liverpool have conceded the first goal. Between now and the end of the season, that’s got to stop.

“Liverpool must get back to keeping clean sheets, and if they do that, they have enough firepower on the pitch  and also on the bench to come on and score goals. They’ve got to take that feeling away, and that would give everyone in this stadium and Liverpool supporters watching belief that they can win the Premier League.”

While we’ve only lost six out of 50 matches in all competitions this season (including two Europa League group defeats of no real consequence), it’s a worrying sign that we’ve fallen behind in 40% of those games.

Although the resilience to routinely come back from losing positions is a welcome sight, it’s not something on which Liverpool will want to be dependent as they aim to see off Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

A win today is essential; a clean sheet would also be most desirable.

Jamie Carragher has sought to clarify what he meant by advising Liverpool to go with a ‘second string’ line-up for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Atalanta.

The Reds’ European involvement is dangling by a thread after they lost 0-3 at home to the Serie A side last Thursday, leaving them with a huge mountain to climb for the return fixture in Bergamo later this week.

The Sky Sports pundit advocated for a much-changed line-up to be fielded in Italy in deference to the Premier League campaign, although he’s insisted that he wasn’t calling for a virtual under-21 team to be put out against the Nerazzurri.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on Saturday, Carragher clarified: “When I said ‘second string’ I wasn’t talking about the kids. I meant, you know, give Trent [Alexander-Arnold] a game, give Diogo Jota a game, Curtis Jones, maybe the goalkeeper [Alisson Becker] plays.

“When you’ve got to play four away in 10 days because they’ve got to go to Atalanta on the Thursday and then Fulham on the Sunday, I was just thinking playing your best team and trying to give it absolutely everything and it might not be enough, because it is going to be tough.

“Then you go to Fulham and you’re not at your best and it doesn’t go well at Fulham, you are then falling behind in the league. The Premier League title is so much bigger than the Europa League. We all want to win both but we have put ourselves in a difficult position but we have still got ourselves in a great position in the league.

“We’re in a better position in the league than we are now in the Europa League, so for me I just think the league is too important, especially if we win against Crystal Palace. Fulham is much more important than Atalanta and even getting through.”

READ MORE: (Video) ‘It blew my mind’ – Sky pundit makes ‘Sunday League’ claim about what he’s seen from Liverpool

There’s logic to Carragher’s suggestion that Jurgen Klopp may be best advised to play the percentages and field a much-changed line-up next Thursday, given the scale of the task that Liverpool face in Europe amid a Premier League title charge where there’s no room for error.

The German was questioned over the alterations he made to the team for the first leg, with his decision to start with Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai on the bench backfiring as then Reds sunk to a heavy defeat.

However, considering the spate of injuries with which we’ve had to contend earlier this season, it makes sense for the manager to utilise the enviable squad depth that he now has, especially with such a hectic period of crucial fixtures coming up.

Obviously we want to see Liverpool excelling on all fronts, but if a European exit on Thursday is the price to pay for winning every Premier League match (and ultimately the domestic title) until the end of the campaign, most fans would probably sign up for that right now.

Klopp could still go with a reasonably strong team against Atalanta and make a few alterations for the Fulham clash three days later with what he’d consider to be the ‘best’ starting XI available to him.

The younger brother of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been revelling in Liverpool’s Europa League hammering by Atalanta on Thursday night.

The Reds’ hopes of giving Jurgen Klopp a victorious send-off in Dublin on 22 May have all but evaporated after a 0-3 defeat at home to the Serie A outfit, and the Argentina international’s sibling couldn’t wait to troll Jamie Carragher.

Immediately after the full-time whistle at Anfield last night, Roberto Garnacho took to X with a rather crude post which read @Carra23 your team is absolutely dogs**t’.

We’re sure that young Garnacho wasn’t the only person with United loyalties who lapped up Liverpool’s defeat last night, even though it’s lessened the probability of Erik ten Hag’s team salvaging a Champions League berth for next season due to its negative impact on England’s European coefficient.

Roberto was within his rights to enjoy some banter over the result, wheras professional obligations would’ve prevented the Red Devils winger from doing so, although why he felt a need to tag Carragher in his tweet is beyond us.

FOLLOW Empire of the Kop on Instagram (@empireofthekop) HERE

LFC may have been terrible against Atalanta but this seems like a good time to send out a reminder that only goal difference is keeping us off the top of the Premier League, whereas United are sixth and a whole 22 points behind us.

Not to mention that they didn’t do England’s coefficient much good by checking out of continental action entirely when finishing bottom of a far from world-beating Champions League group earlier this season.

That might be something to ponder, even though we must state that Roberto Garnacho’s tweet was sent in jest and cannot be interpreted as an invitation to respond with personal abuse.

Liverpool fans hoping for a sign of a fire being lit in the squad’s bellies after the disappointment of points dropped at Old Trafford will have been left baffled at their display in Europe.

From start to finish the Reds were bullied, man for man, across the pitch by Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta side.

It raises serious questions about how the Merseysiders approach the remaining leg in Bergamo – to which Jamie Carragher offered a solution on X (formerly Twitter).

We can understand and respect the rationale on offer from our former defender, and fellow Liverpool content creators, though our view on the matter does differ.

Once we’ve all put the raw emotions aside, we can all, hopefully, accept the possibility of a European comeback away in enemy territory – as unlikely as it may seem at this current point in time.

3-0 to Atalanta – and a very well-deserved victory for the visitors it must be said – but it’s still only half-time in this tie.

When all’s said and done, no club does European comebacks like Liverpool Football Club.

Jamie Carragher brought up the elephant in the room during last night’s Champions League coverage, and Micah Richards didn’t like it!

The two pundits were tasked with predicting the remainder of the ties in this season’s tournament, and both selected Manchester City to go the distance and retain their European title at Wembley on 1 June.

When the ex-Liverpool defender came around to naming the team he thinks will win it out, he declared: “And the winner is, the team with 115 charges, Manchester City!”

Off-camera, Richards could be heard saying ‘wow’ in a deadpan tone which suggested that he wasn’t too impressed with Carragher’s refence to the Etihad Stadium club being charged with 115 alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play and Profit & Sustainability Rules.

Many pundits skirt around that ongoing issue when praising Pep Guardiola’s side to the hilt, and although they may be an excellent team with world-class players, there’s no getting away from the specture of those numerous charges.

Fair play to Carragher for calling it out live on air, even if it were in jocular fashion as a means of winding up his fellow pundit.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday, Jamie Carragher has pinpointed one notable difference between the Reds’ style of play and that of Manchester City.

For the third time this season, Jurgen Klopp’s side were made to rue their inability to make their territorial dominance against Manchester United count in the final score, and that lack of composure in the final third could prove costly in such a closely contested Premier League title race.

Reflecting on Sky Sports post-match, the ex-Anfield defender said: “The one thing when you’re talking about a difference between Liverpool and Manchester City, is how clinical Manchester City are, and I just think that, with a lot of counterattacks, they play that better pass.

“The teams are different, I get that. Liverpool are more end-to-end, pressing – a bit mad, if you like, whereas it’s more composed with Manchester City.”

Liverpool have outscored City in the Premier League this season (72 to 71), but the underlying statistics suggests that the gap should be much wider. As per FBref, the Reds have the division’s highest xG of 70.7, compared to 62.9 for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Even over the weekend, the respective teams’ composure (or lack thereof) was borne out painfully for those of a Merseyside perspective. We scored twice from an xG of 3.67 against United, while City netted four goals in beating Crystal Palace despite a modest xG of 1.91 (Sofascore).

When the stakes are at their highest, and the margin for error at its slimmest, decision-making in the final third can prove to be the difference between champions and contenders. LFC have room for improvement in that regard; let’s hope we’re not looking upon a similarly rueful narrative once the season ends.

Liverpool fans will be feeling low after watching our glut of chances be wasted at Old Trafford and Jamie Carragher has placed the blame on several players.

Speaking on ‘The Gary Neville Podcast’, the Scouser said: “The attacking players have cost Liverpool today.

“They haven’t done enough and it was almost that feeling that because Manchester United are so poor there’ll always be another chance, it’ll come again.”

That wasn’t the case though and even with all the chances that came the way of Jurgen Klopp’s side, we could only convert from a corner and a penalty.

Missing so many chances is not something we wanted to see as we chase a Premier League title which is now considerably harder to win.

Jamie Carragher’s latest comments on Liverpool’s Luis Diaz could yet divide the fanbase ahead of the summer.

The Champions League-winning ex-defender posited the question as to whether the arrival of a new manager at Anfield would see the Colombian shipped off in the summer.

The Merseysiders are poised for fresh blood and fresh ideas in the managerial hotseat following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to set an earlier end date to his time at L4.

“I’d be really interested in summer. With Liverpool getting a new manager, would that be a position that Liverpool could look at in the summer? Wide left,” the former Red spoke on The Overlap“I think Diaz is good, I don’t think he’s great.”

Will Liverpool sell Luis Diaz this summer?

If you’d asked that question prior to the turn of the year, you might have had a few takers.

However, with the greatest of respect to Carragher, we personally reckon he’s got this one wrong.

Since the turn of the year – earlier if you ask Neil Jones – the 27-year-old has been in phenomenal form.

It’s a particularly significant change of pace for the forward given we were effectively reliant on his goal contributions in a period spanning the end of January and early March. The same period, mind, when Mo Salah was spending a great deal of time on the treatment table.

Papa Diaz throws a spanner into the works

Yes, Diaz’s father has made it clear more than once that his son would like an opportunity to play in La Liga at some point in his career.

It wouldn’t be the first time Liverpool have had to navigate the challenge of Spain’s gravitational pull for South American players.

That said, if the former FC Porto winger isn’t pushing for an exit, we should be doing everything we can to keep him at the club.

Jamie Carragher has predicted the points tally that Liverpool will likely need to reach if they’re to win the Premier League title this season.

With 10 matches remaining for all three contenders, the Reds are level with leaders Arsenal on 64 points, both one ahead of Manchester City.

Speaking on the Fan Debate for Sky, the 46-year-old believes that Jurgen Klopp’s side can only afford to drop four more points from the 30 available if they’re to end the campaign as champions.

Carragher said: “I think 90 points [are needed]. I was looking at the points on the international break and what you might need to do. I think 90 points. That would be Liverpool dropping four points from where they are. If Man City drop four points and Liverpool do the same, I think Liverpool are a point ahead of them.

“I actually think everyone is looking at Arsenal’s fixtures and thinking ‘I could see Arsenal dropping more than four points with the away games they have got’.”

With visits to Old Trafford, Goodison Park and Villa Park still to be negotiated, as well as a home clash against Tottenham, Liverpool will do exceptionally well to get maximum points from their 10 remaining fixtures.

However, we’ve seen from previous years that Man City leave zero room for error when it gets to this stage of the season, so Carragher’s prediction that the Reds will need at least 26 more points to lift the title seems about right.

The message that Klopp will be drilling into his players is that they can only claim three at a time and not to think too far ahead when there are still so many obstacles to overcome, starting with Brighton on Sunday.

Jamie Carragher has been discussing the result that he feels would be most beneficial for Liverpool from the Manchester City v Arsenal clash on Sunday.

The Premier League resumes this weekend with the Gunners top of the table on goal difference from Jurgen Klopp’s side, with the champions one point behind that duo as they welcome the north Londoners to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

The 46-year-old was previewing the match on the Fan Debate for Sky when fellow pundit Gary Neville suggested that a City win on Sunday would send a psychological chill down the spines of the other title contenders.

Carragher replied: “I think even if City lost on Sunday they can still win the league. I think if Arsenal get beat, I don’t see how they can win the league. From a Liverpool perspective, surely you’d want City to lose, but I actually think City can win the league if they get beat. I don’t see Arsenal winning the league if they get beat.

“Then, from a Liverpool point of view, you’re actually fighting against one team. I know the points [difference] wouldn’t be that much, but I just think psychologically it would affect you if City jump above you. It’d be tough for you to come back from that.”

The ideal result for us at the Etihad on Sunday would obviously be a draw which’d see both of our title rivals drop two points.

If there is to be a winner, though, you’d suspect that Arsenal would be the preferred option, given City’s history with embarking on prolonged victorious sequences over the final 10 games of a season.

On the other hand, the Gunners have yet to drop a Premier League point in 2024, and the confidence they’d take from winning away to the champions could make them difficult to stop.

Whatever happens in Manchester, the best result from a Liverpool perspective on Sunday would be a home win against Brighton. It’s no good begging for rivals to drop points unless you take care of your own business.
